Oroville, California: Houseboats sit in a narrow section of water in depleted Lake Oroville in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains on September 5. The northern California lake is currently at 23 percent of its capacity and is suffering from extreme levels of drought. Scientists have determined that the heat wave in the West during the summer of 2021 has broken the record set during the Dust Bowl of 1936.
