Istanbul—Turkish women participate in a religious procession on September 20 during Ashura, the holiest festival of the Shiite Muslim calendar. Ashura commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad killed in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. His death ultimately led to the split of Islam into the Shiite and Sunni sects.
