Shocking Moment Moose Sheds Both Antlers at Once Caught on Camera

Incredible footage of the moment a moose shed both antlers at once has captured viral attention this week.

This rare occurrence was caught on a Ring floodlight camera in Houston, Alaska.

Tyra and Chance Bogert were shocked when they saw the footage caught on their camera of the incredible moment the moose lost its antlers.

Moose typically shed their antlers annually and the process can take hours and even days. Both antlers dropping at the exact same time like this is incredibly unusual.

Chance Bogert told Newsweek: "I knew it was rare because all my hunting friends said they've never seen it in real life, let alone being caught on video."

In another video Bogert picks up the antlers to show off their impressive size to the camera.

Shedding usually happens in early December as cells, called osteoclasts, break down the bone cells that attach the animal's antlers to the skull.

A member of the deer family, only male moose have antlers and their growth is regulated by testosterone levels.

Antlers that are often used to assert dominance are also thought to be alluring for female moose during breeding seasons, as the male with the biggest antlers shows them off to potential mates.

The moose sheds its antlers in the winter to free up to 60 pounds of weight, allowing them to conserve more energy for the cold season.

By springtime, antler bone starts to grow again and as males age, their antlers grow bigger every year.

With over 18 million views on TikTok, the video has received thousands of comments from amazed viewers.

"Dude just hit the eject button like on an electric hand mixer," said one commenter.

Another joked: "Bro just dropped off free dog treats."

Another was amazed to see the footage and agreed: "That's a once in a lifetime opportunity."

"Why did I always think they had to run on something to make them come off?" asked another viewer, while others were amazed and said: "I can't be the only one who didn't know they shed antlers."

"Not me thinking they lived their whole life with the same antlers," said another shocked TikToker.

The family plan to keep the antlers and mount them in their home and even captured a picture of their baby son Thrasher next to the antlers.

They acquired their smart camera for security purposes, but they are now thrilled that they can use it to watch wildlife near their home.
