Map Reveals Joe Biden's Approval Rating by State

A map shows Joe Biden's net approval ratings among registered voters in different states, revealing the large regional differences in how the president is viewed by the electorate heading into the 2024 election.

According to a tracking survey by pollsters Civiqs, last updated on Sunday, overall the president has a net approval rating nationwide of -22 percent, with 57 percent disapproving of the job he is doing and 35 percent approving. This is roughly in line with other approval rating tracking surveys.

A breakdown shows that a majority of all age brackets and both male and female voters disapprove of Biden. While 73 percent of Democrat voters approved of his leadership, 96 percent of Republicans and 65 percent of independents disapprove.

Biden's disapproval rating has outstripped his approval since August 2021, and his favorability is lower than those of previous presidents who went on to win a second term at the same point in their first as far back as Ronald Reagan.

Biden's aggregate favorability rating has recently followed a similar trajectory to that of Donald Trump, his predecessor who lost the 2020 election, who had an approval rating 3.6 percent higher at the same point in his term.

It comes as the president continues to face concerns about his age and mental acuity as he runs for a second term, with recent polls suggesting half of the electorate thinks he is too old to serve. Biden has previously brushed off queries about his physical and mental health.

Joe Biden's Approval Rating Is Strongest in These States

Voters in only three states are more likely to have a favorable view of the president than an unfavorable one, according to Civiqs' data. His approval is strongest in Hawaii, where 51 percent approve to 39 percent who disapprove.

Biden is also still marginally viewed favorably in Maryland—where 46 percent approve to 45 percent who disapprove—and Massachusetts, where 45 percent approve to 44 percent who disapprove.

The president carried all three states in the 2020 election by over 60 percent of the vote, and they are considered states safely in the Democratic column.

Joe Biden's Approval Rating Is Weakest in These States

Biden's approval rating is weakest in West Virginia, where just 19 percent of the electorate support the job he is doing to 75 percent who oppose.

However, this is not his worst disapproval rating: in Wyoming, 76 percent disapprove of his leadership to 21 percent who approve. Similar splits can be found in North Dakota (74 to 21), Idaho and Oklahoma (73 to 20), and Kentucky (71 to 21).

All these states voted overwhelmingly for Trump in 2020 with over 60 percent backing the former president, putting them firmly in the Republican camp.

Joe Biden's Approval Rating in Battleground States

Key swing states that are expected to be in play in 2024 based on the previous election are: Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina and Pennsylvania.

Biden currently has a negative net approval rating in all of these, but it is less severe than in many typically red states, due to the split between those who approve and those who disapprove of the president's leadership.

In Florida, Georgia and Pennsylvania, Biden has a net approval rating of -27 percent, with roughly a third of the electorate viewing him favorably compared to around 60 percent who view him unfavorably.

Similarly, he has a net approval rating of -26 percent in Michigan, where the president has suffered recently among younger voters over his response to the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

The split among voters is less acute in Nevada and North Carolina, where he has a net approval rating of -23 percent and -22 percent, respectively.
