After facing widespread criticism, a Utah judge on Friday reversed his earlier decision forcing two married lesbian parents to give up their foster daughter.
Court officials on Friday released an order signed by Judge Scott Johansen that will allow April Hoagland and Beckie Peirce to keep the 9-month-old child.
Heterosexual couples, Johansen ruled earlier this week, are more fit to raise children than homosexual ones—despite the U.S. Supreme Court in June legalizing gay marriage in all 50 states.
Hoagland and Peirce had supported their foster daughter since August until Johansen ordered them to hand over care to the Utah Division of Child and Family Services.
Johansen originally gave state officials until November 17 to remove the child from their care. On Friday, he scheduled a hearing for December 4 to determine the plans that suit the best interests of the child, according to The Salt Lake Tribune.
Hoagland and Peirce have been married for a year and are licensed foster parents.
