Cars Filmed Dodging Tornado As It Rips Across Texas Highway

Videos of drivers reacting to a tornado on a highway in Texas have gone viral on social media.

The National Weather Service for Fort Worth, Texas, highlighted that by 4 p.m. on Tuesday, December 13, as many as 12 tornadoes may have hit northern Texas, with five confirmed via video or eyewitness evidence.

Drivers were quick to capture their encounters, with videos showing cars attempting to drive around or turn back when faced with a tornado.

One clip, which has been viewed more than 340,000 times showed a tornado at 114 Grapevine, near Baylor Hospital, according to the uploader.

While heavy rain falls, a tornado is visible in the distance, further down the highway. Debris can also be seen swirling in the sky.

One vehicle in front of the person behind the camera is shown slowly reversing before eventually pulling off again once the tornado has left the path of the highway.

Another clip, that has been viewed more than 140,000 times, shows drivers actively turning their vehicles around to avoid the tornado.

As the tornado crosses the path of the highway multiple flashes of light can be seen. It is not clear if this is the result of the tornado impacting electrical lines or whether it is lightning strikes.

Meteorologist and storm chaser Reed Timmer also shared tornado footage to his Twitter page.

"Shots of tornadic supercells today in East Texas. Hearing reports this tornado north of Keachi, LA caused bad damage to Four Point," he wrote as a caption.

Speaking to the camera he said: "I am at the southside of Shreveport, Louisiana where a PDS (particularly dangerous situation) tornado warning was in effect earlier.

"Thankfully though, the confirmed tornado that prompted that warning, a little bit further off to the southwest, right near the Louisiana-Texas border, that was a relatively quick tornado.

"That tornado appeared large and quite strong, you could actually see the top part of that tornado, you could see the tornado cyclone above it.

"It certainly had a TDS (tornado debris signature) on radar. Thankfully that tornado quickly weakened as it headed up towards the south side of Shreveport."

KNOE8 weather reporter intern Jake Lambright also shared images of the aftermath of other tornadoes seen in Louisiana.

"Tornado Damage: New photos just in from Union Parish, LA. Major damage left behind after the tornado trailed through earlier. Several reports of injuries have already been made," he wrote as a caption.

The four pictures shared showed multiple homes had been at least partially destroyed and damaged by the storm. It is not yet clear if any people were injured or killed as a result of the tornado.
