Herat, Afghanistan: Iranian aid teams search for remains in the western province of Herat on October 9, two days after a lethal 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck the region and killed over 2,000 people, according to Taliban officials. U.N. officials report that women and children comprise more than 90 percent of the casualties since the daytime quake struck when they were at home and most men were out working. Entire towns have been reduced to rubble and hundreds of people remain missing in the Zinda Jan district, the quake’s epicenter. Multiple aftershocks have hit the region since, including two more 6.3 magnitude quakes on October 11 and 15.
