Portland, Maine: Ten-year-old Congolese asylum seeker Valere and retired surgeon Dr. Laurie Leonard, 95, play chess on July 15. The tournament was organized by The Gift of Chess, a nonprofit that encourages immigrants to learn the game, build life skills and connect across cultures. Portland—a sanctuary city—received a surge of asylum seekers this year, most bused from the Mexican border.
