Swan Song

Swan Song Olaf Niess catches a swan as he rounds up the creatures from the city’s Alster river on November 19. Dubbed the “Swan Father,” Niess is responsible for transporting the swans to an ice-free lake nearby for the winter. The relocation is an annual tradition that dates back to 1818 and takes place before Alster freezes over. The swans will then be returned to the river at the first sign of spring.
