Post-Coup Bounce

Istanbul—Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan addresses supporters on August 7 at a massive rally against last month’s failed military coup. According to Reuters, the crowd at the rally was too big to be contained in a parade designed to hold more than a million people. Erdogan, whose Justice and Development Party (AKP) came to power in 2002 on a platform of moderate Islamism, has used the attempted coup to cement his power and clamp down on opposition, purging thousands from the military and judiciary and arresting dozens of journalists.
