A dead leopard is carried high through a crowd in Gauhati, in the northeastern state of Assam. The beautiful animal was not shot but died after falling into a narrow cave near a temple – and could not be rescued. Increasingly, leopards are making their way into populated areas because deforestation and other environmental changes are depriving them of vital habitats. In January, a leopard that wandered into a city in eastern India went on the rampage, killing one man and injuring several others.
