Beaujolais Nouveau is often belittled in the West but the Japanese can't get enough of it. These revellers, including some who might be too young to know the difference between ordinary grape juice and a Gamay Noir à Jus Blanc primeur wine, celebrate a new vintage by bathing in the stuff. Japan imported almost eight million bottles last year. What distinguishes Beaujolais Nouveau from other wines is that it ferments for only a handful of weeks.
