'Wordle' #932 Clues, Tips and Answer for Sunday, January 7 Puzzle

Since the English-language puzzle game Wordle launched to the public, millions of people worldwide have attempted to solve the daily brainteaser.

New York-based software developer Josh Wardle first shared Wordle with the world in October 2021, and the game soon became a smash hit around the English-speaking world.

The game's sudden popularity led The New York Times to purchase it for an undisclosed seven-figure sum.

Part of Wordle's success can, in part, be explained by its simple gameplay loop, which uses a color-coded system to inform players about their choices.

Players are tasked with using different colored tiles to help them solve a five-letter word in six attempts or fewer.

A green tile tells the player the letter is correct and in the right place, a yellow one means that while the letter is correct, it is in the wrong place. A gray tile means the letter is not in the word at all.

Erhan Aslan, an expert in linguistics who teaches at the University of Reading in the U.K., offered some advice to Wordle users in a previous interview with Newsweek.

"One thing that I think is important in this game is the starting word chosen. Starting off with words that include commonly used vowels, for example, e and a, consonants such as r and t, and sound sequences might be helpful. Choosing a word that starts with q, z, j, or x, for instance, may not be the best choice," Aslan said.

"As you get more feedback after a few guesses, users need to draw on some knowledge of phonics to narrow down or eliminate some words that they might be thinking," Aslan added.

"For example, if the second letter of the target word is l (indicated by green) and the player feels that the word starts with a consonant, they will need to know that there are only a few consonant cluster possibilities (such as bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, sl)."

The answer to today's puzzle will be revealed at the end of the article, so scroll down with caution if you want to solve it for yourself.

The answer to today's Wordle puzzle is "stony."

Did you solve today's brainteaser? It might not have been the most difficult to solve, but it will still have tested some players.

Were you among those who solved it? If so, congratulations, but don't be put off if not as Wordle will return with a new puzzle tomorrow.

What Does Stony Mean?

Merriam-Webster defines "stony" as "abounding in or having the nature of stone" or "insensitive to pity or human feeling."

An example in a sentence is: "The judge's stony demeanor didn't raise the defendant's hopes for a more lenient sentence."
