Wife Uses Oscars Ceremony Trick When Husband Stories Get Too Long: 'Genius'

Amber Wright's husband hears the Academy Awards theme music several times a day, but he hasn't won anything.

The South African couple have gone viral on TikTok for Amber's clever method of shortening her husband Nick's lengthy stories: playing the Oscars music over his speaking. The trick has led to laughs from both Nick and viewers online; after it was posted six days ago, the video has already received over 2.3 million views, over 275,000 likes and nearly 5,000 comments.

"He can really take the scenic route on a story, where I am more of a 'get to the point' kind of person," Amber, 31, told Newsweek. "I very often have to premise one of his stories with 'Can I please have the abridged version today?'"

Amber said the idea to play the iconic Oscars music came to her on one such occasion, though she is quite the veteran listener of Nick's stories. They have been together for 12 years.

Making videos about the everyday laughs and pranks they share as a married couple was a pandemic hobby-turned-full-time role. But the couple's journey of laughs was not without trial.

"In August of 2020, I was diagnosed with breast cancer and so the funny videos stopped in order to focus on my healing," Amber said. "Towards the end of 2022, we began posting videos together regularly again, and people loved them... People really seem to love seeing us poke fun at some of the things most couples face."

Indeed, viewers love Amber's Oscars trick on Nick, with many saying they were inspired to implement something similar with their partners, or colleagues.

"This is pure genius! Searches Oscar music on YouTube immediately," @deeromi wrote.

"I should use this at work when guys mansplain," @prettypinksoulmovement said.

Even Microsoft commented, saying the trick would be a useful feature in Teams meetings.

Despite the teasing, Amber spoke about the meaningful bond she shares with Nick and their mutual love for laughter.

"One of the reasons I fell in love with Nick was because of his amazing sense of humor," Amber said. "Through the tough trials we have faced, we have always been able to be silly together and make each other laugh... Through our videos, people can really see our personalities and the kind of relationship we have."

The joke may be wearing thin on Nick, though, based on the desperation with which he asks Amber at the end of the video: "Is this going to be the rest of my life?"

Amber said that Nick has taken well to the content-creator lifestyle, adding that he often comes home excitedly with video ideas of his own. "I think he loves it almost as much as me now," she said.
