Why Al Roker and Hoda Kotb Are Missing From the 'Today' Show

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors

Summer may not officially arrive until June 20, but Hoda Kotb and Al Roker are getting their Summer Fridays in early.

The Today show stars — along with fellow cohosts Craig Melvin and Carson Daly — were absent from the Friday, May 3, episode of the broadcast. And whenever the hosts are missing, viewers of the beloved morning show are always wondering where they went.

Savannah Guthrie got ahead of any concern by explaining that "Hoda and Craig are getting a little jump on the weekend," per Us Weekly, noting that Sheinelle Jones and Jacob Soboroff were on in their place. Soboroff covered Daly's "Popstart" segment while Dylan Dreyer — who filmed her spot in Kentucky — took over Roker's weather report, according to Us.

Kotb, meanwhile, has been sharing photos, videos and selfies from New Orleans' Jazz Fest on her Instagram account since Thursday, May 2. Not only does the NBC anchor seem to be having the time of her life, Guthrie was so happy to see it.

Roker, for his part, is focusing on his health — and sharing with his Instagram followers that classic Al Roker optimism and positivity.

"C'mon, @starttoday_ family! Let's #boogiedown and get those steps in as we get ready for #friyay #goknicks," he captioned a video of himself walking on the treadmill on Thursday.

"Let me tell you, this morning, I did not want to get on the treadmill," Roker shared. "I had to have a little chat with myself, and I said, 'Dude, let's do it.' And now, 20 minutes later, I got stuff done, ready to get the day started."

The weatherman, who blasted Al Jarreau's "Boogie Down" throughout the workout, radiated inspiration while making a second mention of the upcoming weekend. "Having a great day! Almost Friday!" he declared.
