There are just a days left for many Americans to sign up for health insurance for this year.
The open enrollment period for health coverage for 2024 began on November 1, 2023. The last day to enroll in or change health plans for the year is January 16 for the majority of states (the deadline has been extended a day because January 15 is a federal holiday). However, the deadline differs for more than a dozen states as well as Washington, D.C.
Coverage starts on February 1 for those who enroll in or change plans between December 16, 2023, and January 16 and pay their first premium.
However, people can still get health coverage during the rest of the year if they qualify for programs like Medicaid or for a special enrollment period as a result of a recent life event like losing other coverage, moving, getting married or having a baby.
The Biden administration said on Wednesday that a record-breaking 20 million have signed up for health insurance through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplaces since the open enrollment period launched in November.
The latest projections mean that millions more Americans have signed up for health insurance this year compared to 2023, which was another record-breaking year in which 16.3 million people sought heath insurance through the ACA. Enrollment has risen since Biden took office, with his administration rolling out tax credits that give Americans access to low-cost plans, including some that keep monthly payments under $10.
"We must build upon this progress and make these lower health care premiums permanent," President Joe Biden said in a statement on Wednesday. "But extreme Republicans have blocked these efforts at every turn."
In remarks that he will likely repeat on the campaign trail this year, Biden said Republican plan "would raise costs for millions of people, especially older Americans and small business owners who rely on the marketplace for their coverage, by repealing the improvements I signed into law."
