Weather Warnings, Forecasts, School Closures, Travel Disruptions: Northeast U.S. Digs Out of Heavy Snowstorm

A large snowstorm dumped several inches of snow across New England late Sunday night and in the early hours of Monday.

The storm forced the closure of schools in New York City and Boston, while New Jersey declared a state of emergency, CNN reported.

Five inches fell on New York's Central Park while some areas of the Northeast were hit with more than a foot of snow overnight, according to the National Weather Service, with travel disruption expected to continue throughout the day.

"This storm will snarl both ground and air travel across a large stretch of the nation from the central Plains to the Northeast," meteorologist Alyson Hoegg told AccuWeather.com. "There will [also] be a risk for power outages in the Northeast from this storm, mainly due to the heavy and wet nature of the snow.

"If anyone has to be out during the storm, it is advisable to heed all travel restrictions and guidelines on area roads. People should also make sure they have an emergency kit in their car with food, water and blankets in case they become stranded during the major storm," Hoegg said.

Officials are warning that the heavy snow would make road travel extremely difficult in many areas.

"A winter storm warning means severe winter weather conditions will make travel very hazardous or impossible," New York City Emergency management said in a statement. "Commuters are advised to avoid travel through Monday, as roads will be dangerous."

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said: "New Yorkers should be ready for a very tough commute tomorrow morning with slippery conditions on our streets as a result of tonight's snowfall. Plan to give yourself extra travel time and use mass transit."

Similarly, Governor Phil Murphy of New Jersey advised drivers to ""stay off the roads so that we are able to deploy available resources to clean the snow," CNN reported.

States in the Northeast have deployed thousands of snow plows and law enforcement vehicles in affected areas.

All public schools in New York City are closed, as well as those in Jersey City and Boston, according to the school districts.

The current storm system had already dumped between 3 and 6 inches of snow in many central areas of the country before it moved northeast. Even though the snow has ended, central states are now set for several days of cold temperatures.

"Brrr! It's a cold start to the work week for the central part of the country with sub-zero morning temperatures from Montana to Missouri," the NWS tweeted. "The chill spreads eastward (but less extreme) this week so bundle up out there!"
