Travis Kelce's Teammate Slammed for Using Taylor Swift Lyric in Controversial Speech

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors

Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker raised eyebrows while giving a commencement address at Benedictine College – and even dragged his teammate Travis Kelce's girlfriend Taylor Swift into it.

Butler, who has made his conservative Catholic beliefs well known, began his address by attacking "dangerous gender ideologies," referencing Pride month. He also shared his opinion on working women and President Biden's handling of the COVID-19 crisis.

As for Swift, he referenced a lyric from her song "Bejeweled." "As my teammate's girlfriend says, 'familiarity breeds contempt,'" Butker said, referencing Travis Kelce.

Plenty found this ironic and disrespectful to bring up Swift, considering right before this, he said that women's "most important title" should be "homemaker."

"I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolic lies told to you," Butker said. "Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world. I can tell you that my beautiful wife Isabelle would be the first to say her life truly started when she started living her vocation as a wife and as a mother."

He went on to share his other controversial opinions. "While COVID might have played a large role throughout your formative years, it is not unique," he said. "The bad policies and poor leadership have negatively impacted major life issues. Things like abortion, IVF, surrogacy, euthanasia, as well as a growing support for the degenerate cultural values and media all stem from pervasiveness of disorder."

The NFL player received plenty of backlash on social media. "One of the worst parts of this NFL player's awful speech is that he quoted a Taylor Swift song before telling women they should be homemakers and serve their man's career," OutSports wrote via X (formerly known as Twitter).

"Who knew that Harrison Butker was a hidden Easter Egg in Taylor Swift's new song "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived"," a user wrote about the matter. Another said," I hope that Harrison Butker tries to tell Travis that Taylor emasculates him cause she works and isn't at home cooking and taking care of babies. And I hope Travis beats the s**t out of him."

After receiving backlash for the speech, former Kansas City commissioner Justice Horn wrote on social media: "Harrison Butker doesn't represent Kansas City nor has he ever. Kansas City has always been a place that welcomes, affirms, and embraces our LGBTQ+ community members."
