Travis Kelce's Teammate Recalls His Bashful Reaction to Taylor Swift's First Chiefs Game

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors

Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift made their first public appearance as a couple in September 2023, when Swift watched the Kansas City Chiefs defeat the Chicago Bears. Kelce, according to his teammate, had the most bashful response to his girlfriend's presence at the Chiefs game — her first ever.

On the May 8 episode of the Like a Farmer podcast, Chiefs long snapper James Winchester recalled informing Kelce that Swift was watching.

After finding out the singer was there — from the Chiefs' assistant equipment manager, Jay White — Winchester thought her attendance was "pretty cool" and proceeded to tell Kelce mid-game.

"I walked up to Trav in the game and we were on the sideline and I just said, 'Hey man, that's cool she's here,'" Winchester shared. "He's like, 'Wait, what do you mean? Did they put her up on the Jumbotron or something?'"

Winchester elaborated on the moment, noting how he explained to Kelce how he found out — "Jay just told me right there," he said — before telling his teammate, "That's awesome, man, good for you."

As for Kelce's reaction? "He's just kind of smiling, like, kind of blushing," Winchester said.

Fans will remember that Kelce asked Swift to come to a game, telling Pat McAfee on the September 21 episode of McAfee's podcast: "I told her that I've seen her rock a stage in Arrowhead and she might have to come see me rock the stage at Arrowhead."

He coyly added: "We'll see what happens in the near future."

Three days later, on September 24, Swift cheered on Travis alongside his mom, Donna Kelce.

Swift has since attended many Chiefs games, including Travis' Super Bowl win in February — his third overall.

Travis, for his part, traveled with Swift to both Australia and Asia to watch her perform on her Eras Tour. Swift gave the NFL star a sweet shoutout multiple times, changing the lyrics to "Karma" to fit their romance.

"Karma is the guy on the Chiefs, coming straight home to me," she sang; a clear departure from the original line — "Karma is the guy on the screen, coming straight home to me" — a reference to ex Joe Alwyn, whom she split from last year after six years of dating.
