If you're one of the many people addicted to Wordle, you'll know those daily puzzles are no easy feat.
The game captured the heart of the internet during the COVID-19 pandemic, when it was uploaded online by developer Josh Wardle. Within three months of going live, Wordle had over 2 million players, and over two years later, the game is as popular as ever.
Despite its amazing success, the Brooklyn-based software engineer created Wordle as a gift for his crossword-loving partner, Palak Shah, giving the couple a pastime they could do together during lockdown.
After purchasing Wordle in January 2022, The New York Times described the game's origins as a "love story."
"It's really sweet," Shah told The Times. "This is definitely how Josh shows his love."
Shah was instrumental during Wordle's early days, helping Wardle to narrow down the list of words from around 12,000 options to under 2,500. However, the Times removed six words it felt were offensive, out of date, or used a non-American spelling.
Although he sold Wordle to the Times, Wardle had a few conditions. He didn't want players to have to spend money or extensive amounts of time on the game, which goes against his personal values.
"In general, I'm pretty wary of apps that want to consume all of your time and maximize engagement like that. I just don't think that stuff's very nice to do to other people quite frankly," Wardle told Newsweek in 2022.
When it comes to the monetization of games, Wardle said "there's clearly a line" that he didn't want Wordle to cross, trusting the Times to respect his vision.
"I want to be clear that, when somebody creates stuff and releases it online, it's totally fine if they want to charge you for their effort. I think people should get paid for the hard work they do but there is clearly a line," he said.
"In the case of Wordle, I was creating an experience for my partner. My goal was never to generate income and it just grew organically. That's why it's not monetized, even though it is very easy to imagine how that could look."
