New York Giants GM Talks Daniel Jones' Future at Quarterback

It looks like the New York Giants might not actually be in the market for a new quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft. The Giants were one of the teams that many believed could be pursuing a quarterback, especially since they hold the No. 6 overall pick in the draft.

Instead, the Giants are confident in the quarterbacks on their roster, which includes Daniel Jones, Tommy DeVito, and Drew Lock. Giants general manager Joe Schoen confirmed this while speaking to the media Thursday, and added that Jones is expected to remain the starter.

Jones has shown flashes of what he's capable of, but the Giants have yet to see major success with him at quarterback since they took him No. 6 overall out of Duke in 2019.

Still, Jones has yet to establish any consistency with the Giants. His best season came in 2022, the only season he's played at least 16 games and led the Giants to playoffs. Jones completed 67.2% of his passes for 3,205 yards along with 15 touchdowns and five interceptions. He also rushed for 708 yards and seven touchdowns, setting career bests in passing yards, rushing yards, interceptions and rushing touchdowns.

He has yet to replicate that kind of performance, and the Giants have largely struggled over the rest of his tenure. While Jones was injured for most of the 2023 campaign, playing in just six games, it's hard not to think about whether or not the Giants are wasting a prime opportunity to seek out another opportunity at a starting quarterback in the draft.

This year's quarterback class is primed to be special, at least on paper. Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, Michael Penix Jr., Bo Nix and J.J. McCarthy are all top prospects at the position, and could all get drafted in the first round.

With the Giants holding the No. 6 pick, they would be guaranteed to have the chance to draft at least one of these players. This doesn't mean that all six quarterbacks are guaranteed to succeed in the NFL, but does make it surprising to see the Giants sound so sure about Jones.

Even if the Giants were interested in a quarterback, hitting on one in this draft wouldn't necessarily change the recent fate of their franchise. The Giants have had major issues across their roster for much of Jones' tenure. It's hard for him to succeed without consistent offensive line and wide receiver play. Now, the team doesn't even have running back Saquon Barkley anymore.

Jones has not necessarily been put in a position to succeed, and it might be more important to the Giants to stack their roster around him, rather than find a quarterback replacement.
