Marjorie Taylor Greene Accuses Walmart of 'Grooming' Kids

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Georgia Republican, accused Walmart on Saturday of "grooming" children by selling sex toys next to kids' toothbrushes.

The sale of sex toys in large department stores or pharmacies has become conservatives' latest target in their culture crusade. They have said that the sale of these products further "sexualizes" or "grooms" children, with high-profile right-wing politicians and pundits such as Greene or Fox News host Tucker Carlson arguing that they should not be sold in stores such as Walmart, Target or CVS.

Greene tweeted Saturday that several of her constituents are "upset and absolutely horrified" after a Walmart in Dalton, Georgia, reportedly placed sex toy products next to children's toothbrushes.

She posted photos that appeared to show the products being sold in close proximity to each other, but Newsweek could not independently verify when or where the photos were taken.

"Selling sex toys openly where children are exposed to them is wrong, inappropriate, immoral, indecent, perverted, shameful, and incredibly harmful to children," Greene wrote. "Why is Walmart participating in the grooming and sexualization of children? Is this in all stores or just Dalton?"

She continued: "I don't care how big your corporation, how much money you have, how powerful your lobby is, how big and powerful your political influence is. I just don't care who you are. I will always firmly stand up for what is right and do everything I can to protect kids."

Newsweek reached out to Greene's office and Walmart for comment. Walmart had not publicly responded to Greene's tweets by the time of publication.

The congresswoman's accusation comes only a week after she condemned these stores for selling sex toys during a speech at a New York Young Republican Club event last weekend.

"By the way, you can pick up a butt plug or a dildo at Target and CVS nowadays. I don't even know how we got here," Greene said. "This is the state that we're living in right now."

Critics mocked Greene for bringing up the sale of sex toys, with Twitter users responding with a barrage of memes. Others questioned why she isn't focusing on other issues they see as more important, or why she is OK with the sale of firearms at Walmart instead.

Greene has become among the most high-profile Republicans to make "grooming" accusations against businesses or Democrats. Earlier this year, some Republicans renewed "groomer" allegations against those who back policies to support LGBTQ—specifically transgender—youth such as gender-affirming health care.

Many in the LGBTQ community have accused the congresswoman and other Republicans of pushing hateful anti-LGBTQ rhetoric over their stance on the issue, as the term "groomer" typically refers to pedophilia and has historically been lobbed unjustly toward some in the community.
