What a Million-Dollar Home Looks Like In Every State

If you had a million dollars, what kind of home could you buy? It's a simple question with a not so simple answer. First, and some would argue this is the most important step, you have to actually have a million dollars. But after that, the kind of home you can buy largely depends on where you're looking to buy. This is why we've teamed up with Realtor.com to get a sense of what a million dollar home looks like in each state.

The National Association of Realtors (NAR) reports that in April 2018, the median price of a house was $241,700, a 5.9 percent increase from 2017. Some of the most expensive markets are in coastal states like California, New York and Virginia, making the type (and often size) of million dollar home you can buy different from states with a less competitive real estate market like West Virginia, Iowa or Oklahoma.

Even with property values rising, actual home sales have declined. NAR's forecasted a 0.7 percent decline in pending-home sales in July of 2018. "It is clear affordability constraints have cooled the housing market, especially in expensive coastal markets," said Sam Khater, chief economist at Freddie Mac. "Many metro areas desperately need more new and existing affordable inventory to break out of this slump."

Regardless of the market, a million dollars will still get you a nice house. Most of the homes in this slideshow have huge kitchens and living rooms, and large master suites, and some sport extras like spa-worthy bathrooms, waterfalls, media rooms, even tennis courts.
