Police in Detroit have arrested two suspects in connection to a triple homicide.
The two teenagers, who have not been publicly identified due to them being minors, were arrested based on tips sent to the police department. They are accused of killing three people on February 20, including a 5-year-old boy named Caleb Harris and his mother, Lashon Marshall. Marshall's boyfriend, Aaron Benson, was also found dead in the home. According to local news station WJBK, the family appeared to be killed execution-style.
Although the suspects have been apprehended, family members have said they will continue to seek justice for their loss, news station WDIV reported.
"You could have just left my grandson there alone, I would have come get him," Caleb's paternal grandmother, Shalesa Lloyd, told WJBK on February 21. "He could have grown up to be anything he wanted. He's our future, he was our future. Why would you take my grandson from me?"
Caleb's father lives outside of Michigan has not been publicly identified, but Lloyd told reporters that he too was devastated by the news. Harris was Marshall's only child and loved to travel with her and his father.
Another relative, former Michigan state Representative Sherry Gay-Dagnogo, also questioned why anyone would want to kill them, much less such a young boy.
"What mindset can anyone be in that would shoot a baby in the face intentionally?" Gay-Dagnogo was quoted by WJBK. "You have to be heartless. There is one thing to even a score or have issues with an adult but a child? A child is off-limits."
According to Detroit Police Chief James White, family members had not heard from Caleb and his mother in weeks, so they decided to visit their home, according to WDIV. When they arrived, they saw that the back door was found to be kicked open.
"They continued to check the house for additional victims, and unfortunately they did find a third victim, a child, in a room deceased," White told WDIV.
The family members then called 911. White told reporters that "every resource" the police department has would be going toward the investigation. Despite the alleged suspects being apprehended, the family continues to struggle with their devastating loss.
"Seeing his pictures now I'm just lost, I'm devastated," Lloyd said to WJBK. "I just want justice for what they've done. He was only 5 years old, and I just want to know why."
Newsweek has requested comment from the Detroit Police Department but has yet to receive a response.
