Just when you thought Halloween couldn't get any more extravagant, people are still finding new ways to celebrate the holiday.

This year, Americans will spend an estimated $480 million to dress up their pets for Halloween, according to the National Retail Federation (NRF). That's more than double the amount spent in 2010.

"One of the biggest trends this year is the growth of spending on pet costumes," Prosper Insights Executive Vice President of Strategy Phil Rist said. "Out of the 31.3 million Americans planning to dress their pets in costumes, millennials are most likely to dress up their pets, the highest we have seen in the history of our surveys."

The NRF found that while adults were most likely to dress as witches and children as princesses, a pumpkin was the most popular costume for pets. Other popular costumes include hot dogs, bumble bees and devils.

In the age of the Instagram celebrity pet, this trend doesn't come as a surprise. The LA-based Pomeranian @jiffpom has amassed almost nine million followers on Instagram, posing with celebrities in an array of ultra-cute costumes.

Jiff Pom is the most followed animal on Instagram, and he's likely partially to blame for this surge of interest in pet costumes. No longer just for companionship, some owners are now exploring the visual potential of their pets—and what better excuse to dress them up than Halloween?

The price of keeping a pet is growing. The American Pet Products Association found that the U.S. will likely spend more than $72 billion on their pets in 2018, a number that has been steadily increasing over the decades. In comparison, only $23 billion was spent on pets in 1998.
