Owner Gets Golden Retriever a Puppy to Play With—But There's a Problem

A video showcasing the reality of owning a puppy and an older dog has gone viral on TikTok and things don't happen quite the way you might expect.

The footage, which was shared to a page dedicated to the dogs by @copperandchevy, shows Cooper, the golden retriever, attempting to play with her new furry friend, Chevy, a Bernese Mountain dog.

However, it doesn't matter which toys are thrown the pup's way, she simply isn't interested. The clip captioned: Guys does this thing come with a return policy?" has already garnered a whopping 4 million views.

Layered over the montage of videos, the on-screen text explains: "You get your hyperactive Golden Retriever a puppy but she thinks it's broken."

On paper, these two breeds are perfect for each other as they are both great with other dogs, according to the American Kennel Club (AKC). And they are far from couch potatoes, however some people may beg to differ when watching this video.

It's unclear how old the dogs are, but puppies sleep a lot to support their rapid growth and development, which is probably why Chevy didn't want to play. According to the AKC, newborns typically sleep up to 20 hours a day, and as they grow, the duration decreases, but it remains significant.

The sleeping patterns of puppies are essential for their physical and mental development.

Owners should encourage their canines to sleep when they appear to be drowsy. This can be done by leading them into their bed, crate, or quiet place.

An overly tired dog could lead to "unfortunate behavior" states the AKC. It's important for dogs to wind down. A sleep schedule is essential, so puppies should have the opportunity to nap after exercising.

Like babies, dogs even need a bedtime. Owners can do this by introducing a structured schedule early on as this will help the puppy understand that night is for sleeping, ensuring a more restful sleep for everyone.

Owners should also limit their puppy's consumption of food and water several hours before bedtime. Before settling down for the night, spend time playing, cuddling and take them outside for a bathroom break.

TikTok Reacts

At the time of writing, the video had over 395,000 likes and over 830 comments.

"I need to know if the baby ever played back!!" said one user.

In short, the answer is yes. The TikTok page has since been filled with many wholesome clips showcasing their bond and friendship.

"Puppies [and] babies are very similar. They rest. They will play a bit & sleep a lot, especially large breed dogs!!! If they have any other signs like not eating, vomiting etc. then go to vet," said another user.

Another wrote: "That baby is growing and needs lots of naps."
