Kraft Heinz Food Company is recalling more than 2 million pounds of Oscar Mayer turkey bacon because it may spoil before the "use by" date, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said Tuesday.
The company discovered the problem during an investigation into spoilage-related consumer complaints, FSIS said in a statement. FSIS has not received any confirmed reports of illness stemming from the consumption of these products, it said, but Kraft did, according to the announcement. The agency has categorized the health risk from the bacon as "low." It has initiated a Class II recall. Class II recalls occur when "there is a remote probability of adverse health consequences from the use of the product," according to FSIS's website.
Approximately 2,068,467 pounds of turkey bacon produced between May 31, 2015, and August 6, 2015, may be affected, FSIS said. The products were shipped nationwide.
Kraft did not immediately respond to an email asking how many complaints the company has received and how many stores will be affected.
A recall of 2 million pounds "would be on the larger side, certainly," FSIS spokeswoman Katherine Scheidt told Newsweek. In 2015, only one recall has been larger: In April, Golden Krust Patties of the Bronx issued a Class I recall for more than 9 million pounds of beef and chicken products because they contained egg, which was not on the product labels.
Kraft products were recalled two times in 2014: In one instance, 96,000 pounds of Oscar Mayer hot dogs were recalled because the products may have contained "Classic Cheese Dogs in the Classic Wieners' packages;" and in another instance, 1.77 million pounds of pasta and ground beef products were recalled because of mislabeling.
According to FSIS, those products specifically affected in Tuesday's recall are:
- 56 oz. cardboard boxes (containing four plastic-wrapped packages) marked Oscar Mayer "Selects Uncured Turkey Bacon" bearing the plant number P-9070, the line number RS19 and Product UPC 0 4470007633 0, and with "Best When Used By" dates of 24 AUG 2015 through 26 OCT 2015.
- 36 oz. cardboard boxes (containing three plastic wrapped packages) marked Oscar Mayer Turkey Bacon "Smoked Cured Turkey Chopped and Formed" bearing the plant number P-9070, the line number RS19 and Product UPC 0 7187154874 8, and with "Best When Used By" dates of 28 AUG 2015 through 20 OCT 2015.
- 48 oz. cardboard boxes (containing four plastic wrapped packages) marked Oscar Mayer Turkey Bacon "Smoked Cured Turkey Chopped and Formed" bearing the plant number P-9070, the line number RS19 and Product UPC 0 7187154879 3, and with "Best When Used By" dates of 3 SEPT 2015 through 30 OCT 2015.
