Mother's Day 2018: Gift Ideas, What Presents Most People Spend On

Billions of dollars will be spent for Mother's Day this year, according to research by the National Retail Federation. The NRF has been conducting research on Mother's Day spending since 2003 and predicted that the amount of money spent in 2018 will top spending from every year prior.

A total of $23.1 billion is expected to be spent at businesses like department stores, specialty shops like florists and on online shopping, the NRF said. With 86 percent of Americans celebrating, it can be hard to find that perfect gifts for mom last minute. Of that $23.1 billion, $4.4 billion is expected to be spent on outings like dinner or a nice brunch, according to a survey done by the NRF.

Almost 30 percent of moms are hoping for gifts that are experiences, like a spa gift card or tickets to a show. The age group most likely to gift those experiences are those between the ages of 18 and 34, according to data from the NRF.

So many moms are looking for gifts that double as an experience it's hard to go wrong with tickets to a concert or play. For moms who are into fitness, a class pass for her favorite yoga studio of a gym membership might be the right move.

Moms spend so much time taking care of others, sometimes they need someone to take care of them. A gift card for a spa day or a manicure and pedicure for mom to pamper herself can show her how much you appreciate her.

Nearly 70 percent of those shopping for Mother's Day will pick up flowers for mom, amounting to $2.6 billion. The pretty gesture makes a great addition to a gift or a greeting card, which 77 percent of shoppers plan to buy.

For those who are minding their wallets, a phone call to mom any day of the year might be appreciated and it can even help her live longer, according to a study from 2012 and reported in Southern Living.

New books or tickets to the movies can offer a great way for mom to relax or even make a date night out of her gift.

A new piece of jewelry will likely be purchased for mom by 34 percent of shoppers the NRF predicts.
