Gen X Woman Goes to Extreme Lengths to Avoid Changing Flight Online

A video of a mom's "crazy" way of changing her flight booking has baffled users on TikTok.

The video was posted by @lettekylie and has had 2.4 million views since it was first shared on January 27.

A message overlaid on the video says: "When my mum is not a 'do it online' person, so we are going to go change her flight at the airport itself instead." According to hashtags shared with the post, the mom is from Generation X (those roughly born from 1965 to 1980) and the flight appears to be one from Ryanair, the Irish low-cost airline.

The footage shows the view from the inside of a car as it speeds down a highway. A woman is shown in the car shaking her head and holding her hand over her mouth while looking at the camera.

A caption shared with the post simply reads: "We love her determination."

As digitally unsavvy as the woman in the latest post may have seemed, there has been a growth in the adoption of technology among older generations since 2012, according to a 2019 survey by the Pew Research Center.

More than 93 percent of millennials own smartphones, compared with 90 percent of members of Generation X, 68 percent of baby boomers and 40 percent of the "Silent Generation," the survey found.

While the proportion of millennials who use social media has remained largely unchanged since 2012, the portion of "Gen Xers, Boomers and Silents" who use social media have all risen by at least 10 percentage points during this period, according to the survey.

A lack of digital technology skills among older generations may have a lot to do with confidence.

A 2015 Pew Research Center survey found that roughly a third of internet users aged 65 and over describe themselves as either only a little (23 percent) or not at all (11 percent) confident in their ability to use electronic devices to do necessary online activities.

'This Is Actually Crazy'

TikTok users were perplexed and amused by the mom's actions in the latest viral clip.

Daze wrote "This is actually crazy" and alex noted "This is insane."

James G said: "I'm sorry I simply cannot fathom this. Beyond my capabilities."

Blind Psychic wrote "That's so frustrating" and @theobvious2 asked "How about over the phone?? This is shocking lol."

Okay noted: "Just for the airport people to say 'you have to do it online'."

Cheers.Mate said the mom must have been thinking "I don't trust that new technology."

TetsuoMiyako noted: "I swear this is the kind of stuff older people who say they're always busy are doing."

Newsweek has contacted the original poster for comment via TikTok. This video has not been independently verified.
