2023 has been one of Meghan Markle's highest profile years since stepping down from her working role within the royal family and moving to the U.S. with Prince Harry in 2020.
Amid a turbulent 12 months in terms of popularity and public opinion, Meghan has made a number of spectacular appearances at events wearing a succession of showstopping looks.
Widely followed and written about for her fashion choices, Meghan has in the past expressed pride in the fact that she doesn't use a stylist, something which allows her a freedom of independence over what she wears, when she wears it and why.
Here, Newsweek looks at Meghan's fashion highlights of 2023, from date night suits to red carpet evening gowns.
Relaxed Date Night
Meghan's first major public appearance of 2023 was made in April where she was spotted in the bleachers of the crypto.com arena in Los Angeles with Prince Harry, watching the LA Lakers take on the Memphis Grizzlies in a basketball game.
For the occasion, Meghan wore a relaxed co-ordinating blazer and shorts set in pink linen from the label Staud.
NYC Awards Ceremony
Meghan was a recipient at the Women of Vision awards in New York City on May 16, where she walked the red carpet with Prince Harry wearing a glittering gold evening dress with a sweetheart neckline and keyhole cut-out designed by Johanna Ortiz.
Meghan's appearance at the ceremony was overshadowed when after the event the duke and duchess were the victims of what their spokesperson called a "near catastrophic" car chase.
Night With the Stars
Meghan rubbed shoulders with fellow A-listers in September where she was spotted among the celebrity crowd gathered to watch a performance of Beyoncé's "Renaissance" world tour in Los Angeles.
In line with the singer's request that attendees wear silver to mark Virgo season, Meghan was photographed in a sleek outfit featuring a silver sequin skirt and black halter-neck blouse.
Invictus Games
In September, Meghan accompanied Prince Harry to Germany for the Invictus Games veterans tournament.
For a day watching the sports events, Meghan wore a black and white outfit featuring a classic pair of cropped cargo shorts with a black tank top, and worn overtop was a J Crew sweater-blazer.
NATO Photocall
During the Invictus Games, Meghan and Harry took part in a photocall with the NATO representatives present at the event.
For the occasion, Meghan was photographed wearing a chic outfit in muted shades of beige, comprising a pair of classic wide-legged pants from Gabriella Hearst and open-neck silk blouse by L'Agence.
Closing Ceremony
For the closing ceremony of the games, Meghan pulled out the fashion stops, opting for a striking teal strapless evening dress with floral laser cut-out details from popular fashion brand, Cult Gaia.
Meghan styled the outfit in her classic pared-back way, wearing a pair of simple gold earrings with her hair styled in an updo, completed with a pair of plain nude suede pumps.
World Mental Health Day
World Mental Health Day on October 10 marked an important day for Meghan and Prince Harry as they hosted a forum connected with their Archewell foundation at a mental health festival in New York City.
For the event, Meghan opted for a classic white pantsuit designed by Altuzarra, that featured the modernizing twist of being completely off the shoulder.
Hollywood Red Carpet
Sticking to her favored muted color palette, Meghan's last red carpet appearance of the year was made in November for the Variety Power of Women gala in Los Angeles.
Marking a rare public appearance without Prince Harry, Meghan looked the epitome of royal elegance on the carpet wearing a beige asymmetric evening gown, specially designed for her by the high-end fashion label Proenza Schouler.
