Ivanka Trump to Receive Apology from British Minister After Leaked Memos Call President's Administration 'Inept'

First daughter Ivanka Trump will receive an apology from a British minister for leaked confidential memos in which an ambassador to Washington called the Trump administration "inept" and "dysfunctional."

British trade minister Liam Fox told BBC radio that he would apologize to senior White House adviser Ivanka Trump for the memos from Ambassador to Washington Kim Darroch when he meets Trump in Washington, D.C.

"I will be apologizing for the fact that either our civil service or elements of our political class have not lived up to the expectations that either we have or the United States has about their behavior, which in this particular case has lapsed in a most extraordinary and unacceptable way," Fox said.

Fox added that "malicious leaks" such as that "can actually lead to a damage to that relationship, which can therefore affect our wider security interest."

Darroch in memos to the British government dating back to 2017 wrote that reports of fighting within the White House were "mostly true." In one memo, Darroch wrote, "We don't really believe this administration is going to become substantially more normal; less dysfunctional; less unpredictable; less faction riven; less diplomatically clumsy and inept."

Prime Minister Theresa May told reporters on Monday that it was "of course, a matter of regret" that the memos appeared in a Sunday newspaper and that "contact has been made with the Trump administration, setting out our view that we believe the leak is unacceptable." While ministers said the British government does not share the same views as Darroch, May's spokesman has said she had complete faith in him.

President Donald Trump told reporters that he and his administration "are not big fans of" Darroch and that "he has not served the U.K. well, so I can understand and I can say things about him but I won't bother."

The leak comes as the U.K. hopes to strike a trade deal with the U.S. after its scheduled exit from the European Union, and just over a week after a video went viral showing Ivanka Trump appearing to butt in a conversation among global leaders at the G20 summit. Among the leaders who did not appear enthused with Ivanka Trump's participation was May.

That viral video, as well as photos of the first daughter with the world leaders though she lacks their government expertise, led to #IvankaResign trending on Twitter last week.

President Trump named his eldest daughter an unpaid adviser and on Friday claimed that "foreign leaders loves" her at the G20 summit.

"They just think she's great," the president said. "The people, the foreign leaders, really like her a lot."

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Newsweek Monday on Ivanka Trump receiving the apology.
