Woman Helps Fiancé Escape Ohio Jail, Gets Arrested: Police

A woman who allegedly assisted her fiancé escape from an Ohio jail was among several people arrested following a prison break incident, according to police.

The Scioto County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) said in a Monday news release said Allie Angelo, 32, helped Jeffrey Fields, 37, escape from the Star Community Justice Center in Franklin Furnace.

In the release, police said officers arrived at the prison after they were alerted to reports of "two to three male inmates escaping" at about 8:06 p.m. this past Saturday.

Police said the caller told them inmates had escaped the prison by possibly climbing the fence and requested the Ohio State Highway Patrol be notified.

Deputies then obtained the names of the people who escaped from the jail and also the description of a woman who was close to the fence at the time of the prison break.

Police said they later arrested the alleged escapees Fields; Clifford Morris, 33; Aaron Brigemen, 43; and Walker Pence, 22. All men had been jailed for non-violent, low-level drug offenses.

Meanwhile, Angelo and Matthew Sladen, 31, were arrested for aiding escape, a 4th-degree felony, and aiding escape and degree and possession of criminal tools, a 3rd-degree felony.

The news release added: "Upon the initial arrival of deputies, deputies stopped and spoke with a female asking if she had witnessed anything to do with the escape. She stated no.

"This female matched the description given by the employee of Star Community Justice Center. Deputies quickly relocated and detained her."

The news release continued: "Allie Elizabeth Angelo, came to the Star Community Justice Center with her ex-husband, Matthew Daniel Sladen, to assist her fiancée, Jeffrey Randle Fields, escape.

"Deputies obtained the location of Sladen, which was Walmart in Waverly, Ohio. Deputies spoke with Sladen and asked him to remain there.

"The Waverly Police Department was contacted and they responded and located Mr. Sladen, detaining him until the arrival of Scioto County Deputies."

While police spoke with Sladen, Fields was located and arrested on Junior Furnace Road. The Ohio State Highway Patrol located and detained escapee Morris along the same road.

Police said the only inmate on the run is Thomas Comberger, 46. He is described as 6'4" tall and 245 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes. The public is asked to call 911 if they spot Comberger.

SCSO Sheriff David Thoroughman said the investigation into the escape will be carried out by the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP).

The OSHP told Newsweek: The Ohio State Highway Patrol's investigation is currently ongoing regarding the escape at STAR Community Justice Center. Details regarding the investigation will be made available when the investigation is complete."

According to the Statista Research Department, as of May 2021, the U.S. had the highest prisoner rate in the world with 639 inmates per 100,000.

There have been several cases where inmates have managed to escape from prison in the U.S. alone.

In May, a filing error was blamed after a North Carolina inmate was allowed to walk out of prison.

Quay Davis, 28, had been sentenced for gang-related charges and had been taken from the Bertie Correctional Institute in Windsor to a courthouse in Charlotte.

When there he was entered into the system without a writ hold, which allowed him to be kept in custody. As a result, Davis was released from the Mecklenburg County Corrections Center after a weapons charge against him was voluntarily dismissed.
