During summer you'll often find me squinting in the bright sunlight despite having a perfectly usable pair of glasses sitting on top of my head. The reason for the madness? I love the way they look in my hair.
If, like me, you've spent years wishing for a hair accessory to give you the same pushed-back effect as your favorite shades, we have good news—French side combs could be the answer to your hair prayers.
One influencer has shared an easy-to-follow tutorial to get the look at home.
Ashley Paige's video, posted to her TikTok account @ashley.paiige on April 18, has gained over 216,000 likes and 2.2 million views, after she called the hack the "best $9 I ever spent."
Paige said that the hair accessories—which act as a headband—are "super-inexpensive and they hold way better than bobby pins."
Starting with a center parting, Paige took the front section of her hair on one side and pulled it back whilst twisting upward.
To add in the French-inspired accessory, Paige explained, "take the inside of your comb, scoop it, and push it forward."
Your comb should be almost upright as you rake it back through the hair, then push some of your hair forward as you lay it flat, before repeating this process on the other side of your center parting with a second comb.
Paige said the result is "so sturdy, lasts forever, and your cute sunglasses can stay on your face."
If you feel the style needs more volume, simply push the side combs further forward.
What Do the Comments Say?
Viewers of the video were surprised by how much they liked the hack, as one said: "Omg love! so much nicer than the square sunglasses headband."
A few commented on how the trend is one they remember, with one TikTok user saying, "These have been around for ever but I'm glad they're coming back in!"
Another added, "growing up is realizing that your mom was so much cooler than you gave her credit for (my mom used these my whole childhood)."
"That was my mom's signature look in the 80s, she had curly hair and it looked amaaaazing," said a third.
Speaking of trend cycles, one user begged the internet not to move past the side combs too quickly, saying: "I have been wearing these religiously for the past 15 years and I swear if y'all make these trendy and then decide they are ick in a month..."
