A wedding groom had the father of the bride up out of his seat after delivering an X-rated joke that had guests in hysterics, and the bride blushing.
For some, the idea of public speaking is a fate worse than death. That may sound like an exaggeration, but a 2012 study published in the journal Communication Research Reports backed up that notion.
Just over 800 students were asked to complete a survey ranking their fears. Incredibly, public speaking was selected more often than any other common fear, including death.
One groom at a wedding in Australia showed little in the way of fear during his speech though, despite cracking a gag that would have had lesser men fearing a grisly fate at the hands of their new father-in-law.
In a September video posted to TikTok by @dd_wedding films, he can be heard delivering his speech. It is tradition for the groom to thank friends and family, and that is exactly what the groom appears to be doing at first.
"I'd just like to give a special thanks to Pete, for the great gift of all, your daughter..." the groom says, before adding, without missing a beat, "... who I can't wait to unwrap later."
The joke sparks a mix of laughter and audible gasps among the guests, with several turning to gauge the reaction of the bride's father. To his credit, he appears happy to play along. In the video, the father of the bride can be seen standing up, looking around indignantly as guests continue to laugh and cheer. He then takes a large glug of beer, waving to everyone as he does in acknowledgment of the groom's special tribute.
"No one needs to hear that," the bride's father says to the watching crowd as the clip ends, jokily covering his ears as he does.
It's not the first time a wedding speech has taken things in a more X-rated direction, while there have been plenty of documented incidents of family members coming in for a bit of a roast.
However, many were still surprised that the groom was able to crack this kind of gag in front of his new father-in-law and emerge unscathed.
"They must have a good relationship," one viewer wrote, with another praising the way the dad "took it like a champ."
A third user wrote that it was "funny" but added that "as the father of a daughter I never want to hear those words," while a fourth posted they would be "running for the hills" if they cracked this kind of joke about their dad-in-law.
Though some felt the joke was "disrespectful", others described it as "gold."
Ultimately, the joke went down well with their guests, the dad went with it, and, most importantly of all, the groom appears to have escaped unscathed.
