Why Jack Antonoff Ended an Interview Over a Taylor Swift Question

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors

Jack Antonoff, a close collaborator and confidant of Taylor Swift, remained discreet when pressed about details regarding her highly anticipated album, The Tortured Poets Department.

When questioned by the Dutch news outlet NRC on Friday, March 22, about his involvement in Taylor's upcoming 11th studio album, set for release on April 19, Jack immediately shut it down. "You know I don't talk about that" he replied. "If you're looking for clickbait, you've come to the wrong place. Thank you for this conversation," he added before promptly ending the conversation.

Jack is renowned as Taylor's trusted collaborator in both producing and songwriting, having left his mark on several of her acclaimed albums: "1989," "Reputation," "Lover," "Folklore," "Evermore," and "Midnights." Given this extensive history, it's reasonable to anticipate his involvement in her latest project.

While explicitly discouraging questions about the forthcoming album during the interview, Jack did draw a parallel between his recent endeavor with his band "Bleachers" (which he is the lead singer for) and his work with Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey.

"I don't see it as producing," he shared. "I create music with my friends. It comes as it comes. I'm not the kind of producer who likes to give commands from behind a mixing console. I concern myself with the music itself; the way in which you can manage the creative process."

The songwriter continued: "Success is a strange phenomenon. It distracts attention from the ordinary mechanisms that lead to good pop music. Being able to listen to each other well is one thing. The artists I work with trust that I can help them make their music better."

Regarding the much-anticipated album "Tortured Poets Department," Taylor announced the news in February during her acceptance speech for the 2024 Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album for "Midnights," a project co-produced and co-written by Jack.

While fans are speculating that the new album delves into her past relationship with ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn, whom she dated from 2016 to 2023, no official confirmation has been made.
