Donald Trump's Popularity Compared to Joe Biden's as of Presidents Day

Former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden have similar popularity ratings as of Presidents Day on Monday, according to recent polling.

With Biden being the Democratic incumbent and Trump the frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination, it will likely be a re-match between the two in the upcoming general election in November. However, Americans aren't too enthusiastic about their potential prospects, with Trump's favorability in the mid-to-high 40s and Biden's popularity in the low 40s.

In an Echelon Insights poll conducted between February 12 and 14, Trump was viewed as favorable by 44 percent of likely voters, while 55 percent had an unfavorable view of him. Meanwhile, Biden's favorability was slightly lower with 39 percent of likely voters viewing him as favorable and 58 percent viewing him as unfavorable. The poll surveyed 1,015 likely voters and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.

Both Trump and Biden had slightly better ratings in a YouGov/The Economist poll conducted between February 11 and 13. Out of 1,671 U.S. adults, 49 percent said they have a favorable opinion of Trump, while 48 percent said that they view him unfavorably. Biden's results were somewhat less mixed, with 42 percent finding him favorable and 54 percent finding him unfavorable. The margin of error adjusted for weighting was 3.2 percent and the margin of error for registered voters was 3.1 percent.

In a Morning Consult poll that surveyed about 2,000 registered U.S. voters, Trump and Biden again had similar popularity ratings. A total of 45 percent had a favorable view of Trump, while 51 percent had an unfavorable opinion. Meanwhile, Biden had a 43 percent favorability rating while 53 percent viewed him as unfavorable. The poll was conducted from February 9 to 11 and had an unweighted margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.

Newsweek reached out to Trump's and Biden's campaigns via email for comment.

During his presidency, Biden has faced backlash over the U.S. economy and the situation at the U.S.-Mexico border. While the economy has seen some good news in recent weeks with an unemployment rate of 3.7 percent in January and an increase of 353,000 jobs last month, the surge in illegal migrant crossings at the southern border remains an issue. The president did back a Senate bill earlier this month that would've given $20 billion to border security and reformed the American immigration system, but it failed.

Although Trump has maintained a base of loyal supporters known as MAGA from his Make America Great Again movement, he faces four criminal indictments, including two election interference cases, one federal and one state-level, for his alleged efforts to overturn Biden's 2020 election win. Trump has pleaded not guilty to all charges and has claimed that the cases against him are politically motivated.

So far, Trump has won every state Republican primary and caucus, aside from the Nevada primary as he was not on the ballot. He has been campaigning in South Carolina ahead of its Republican primary on February 24. Meanwhile, Biden, who has won every state Democratic primary, will be vying for the support of Michigan voters during the state's Democratic primary on February 27.
