When it comes to parenting, marriage comes first.
This was one man's motto in a video posted to TikTok by his daughter, Pia (@sophiacuerquis), which went viral for revealing his ultimate love for his wife. In the video, Pia shares that her father always makes sure to tell his children that he loves their mother the most. Since the video was posted only one day ago, it has received over 100,000 likes and over 500 comments.
"Honestly, one thing our dad is going to do is, he's going to tell us how much he loves us and then follow up with how much he loves our mom more," she said in the video. "Us kids, we're top two...and we stay at number two because mom is number one. Period."
In the video, Pia describes her dad's constant refrain about how much he loves her mother—and she's not mad about it: "I mean, iconic. Here they are," she said, revealing a photo of the happy couple.
Pia goes on to show text messages from her dad in a group chat, where he says: "Love you all, mostly you mom."
Many viewers found Pia's content, though perhaps controversial, extremely relatable. Some offered their own stories and reflections on their parents' happy marriage.
"My parents have been married for 40-plus years, he's always said the same and used to tell my brother, 'Don't talk to my wife like that.' Full respect," @morganallya wrote.
"I think people get confused too, because this doesn't mean the kids never come first, it just means they prioritize their marriage," @_ryliemadison commented. "Happy parents, happy kids."
"What better gift can you give your daughters than to model for them the exact type of love they deserve to find for themselves one day," @lynnlee1212 said.
Other users had their own spin on family priorities: "Leaving for work, I tell my wife: 'I love you babe,' then, turn [to] our dog, 'but I love you more,'" @cardigan.dude wrote.
Putting Mom First
Another video on TikTok recently made waves by revealing a similar approach, but this time within the context of early childhood parenting.
The creator, Nika Diwa, captured her husband disciplining their young children by gently reminding them that their mother comes first for him.
"When you're ready to apologize to mom, please let me know, alright?" Diwa's husband said in the video. "In this household, mommy is always number one. Mommy puts me number one, and I put her number one. That's the only way that we can make you, make sure that you have everything that you need."
Some viewers in the comments praised the man for demonstrating "gentle parenting," a parenting method that employs a compassionate approach to accountability.
And, from Pia's video, it seems that such logic makes sense come adulthood: "You cannot tell me [my dad] does not prioritize my mom. As he should...And don't y'all forget it."
