Cocker Spaniel With Hiccups Sits on Squeaky Toy, Hilarity Ensues

Social media users can't get enough of one poor cocker spaniel who surprised himself with the hiccups recently but couldn't understand why he was squeaking each time.

The clip was posted by the dog's owner, TikTok user @kaysamantha1, and shows the moment her cocker spaniel, George, started hiccuping while lounging in his dog bed. But these were no ordinary hiccups. George was "laid on his ball," which meant that each hiccup was accompanied by a hilarious squeak from the toy.

George's owner, Kay of Sheffield, England, shared the humorous video with her TikTok followers on December 29, and now people can't get enough of the pup's trouble. In just a few days, the video has been viewed over 451,300 times and gained more than 50,800 likes. The reaction was unlike anything Kay has experienced, and the clip quickly became her most popular video.

While the hiccups came as a surprise to the cocker spaniel, he didn't seem too bothered about getting up and simply accepted his fate.

Like humans, dogs are no strangers to hiccups, which are caused by a rapid contraction of the diaphragm. PetMD says that the diaphragm should normally contract smoothly, in line with the dog's natural breathing. But when it spasms suddenly, pesky hiccups result.

Fortunately, they aren't painful for dogs and will usually last for just a few minutes, PetMD says. If owners are concerned that the hiccups are persistent, they can offer their pup room temperature water or encourage them to move around to change their breathing pattern and hopefully end the contractions.

Sometimes, a dog may get hiccups regularly as a result of drinking water too quickly. Slowing them down is a useful way of preventing the hiccups before they even happen in some dogs.

How Did Commenters React?

Since the video of George's hiccups went viral last month, he has become an instant TikTok sensation. But hopefully next time it happens he won't be near his squeaky ball and will be less confused by the noises he's making.

So far, more than 200 people have commented on the post, with many people calling it the sweetest and funniest moment they've ever seen. One comment reads: "This is the content I'm here for."

Another person joked: "He's like, why is my [hiccups] squeaking."

Another TikTok user said: "That's the cutest thing I've seen this morning."

Newsweek reached out to @kaysamantha1 via TikTok for comment and could not verify the details of the case.
