Sneaky Kitten Who Loves to Break Into Owner's Safe Wins Pet of the Week

This week, we have seen a little boy teaching his dog to play with dominoes and laughed at two cats' very different reactions to moving house.

We've also been gathering our favorite pet pictures and videos from our readers for the weekly Pet of the Week.

Winner

This week's Pet of the Week is Bluey, a cat with a streak of mischief.

"I was getting in my safe, left it open, walked away," owner Chris told Newsweek.

However, when he returned, he found his kitten inside the safe. "Bluey made himself so comfortable," said Chris.

While it looks a little like a theft-in-progress, the safe is the perfect example of a cat's favorite space—a box.

Felines are instinctively drawn to enclosed, hidden spaces, like boxes, from where they can observe their surroundings.

A 2014 study even found that being able to get into a box helped shelter cats with stress when they arrived. Researchers separated 19 such felines into two groups, one with access to a hiding box, and the other without. The cats with hiding boxes had lower stress scores over a two-week period compared to those who didn't have somewhere to hide.

Finalists

Our first finalist this week is Tike, a dog who was born with a serious heart condition and has recovered against all odds.

His owner told Newsweek: "At 8 weeks, he was diagnosed with a serious heart condition. Two veterinarians said his life would last no longer than six months."

After being getting quotes for surgery upward of $12,000 dollars, the owner didn't give up on Tike. When the Washington State University agreed to take on the case, things started to look up.

"The next day Tike was in surgery, and the following day released," the owner said. "My little boy at 1 pound underwent a major surgery and came out with flying colors! He is now 2 and a half and is perfect."

Next up this week is Sadie, who went to live with owner Caryl Harrigan in Idaho in December 2023.

"She is an Idaho Shag herding dog, more commonly found working outside with sheep or cattle," Harrigan told Newsweek.

However, instead of working as a sheep dog, Sadie has found herself enjoying home comforts. "Sadie has found herself at home with a 75-year-old Londoner instead," said Harrigan.

"She is so much fun, loves to play fetch daily in a nearby park, and is an avid TV watcher. She ignores most programs but loves the commercials, especially the ones with animals or basketballs."

Last but not least this week are special rescues Roxy and Norman.

Roxy is 15 years old, and her canine companion Norman is 6. Rescued by their owner Angela Faas, they are now living their best lives.

She told Newsweek: "Roxy was being abused, and Norman was neglected. Not any longer! They are my comfort."
