Internet Backs Bride Uninviting 'Bitter' Friend Who Sneered at Her New Life

A bride-to-be has taken the dramatic decision to uninvite one of her closest friends just days before her wedding following a bitter fallout that began at her bachelorette party.

Details of the ugly turn of events were shared to Reddit's "Am I the A**hole" subreddit by the bride's close pal, who shared her story to the forum in the hope that it might elicit some sympathy.

What she got instead, however, was a barrage of cutting responses so brutal, moderators were forced to close the thread down after it reached over 10,000 upvotes.

There's no denying the fact that marriage can changes friendships.

As television personality and wedding planner Sandy Malone explained in the Huffington Post: "You can love your girlfriends as much as you want and you can spend tons of time with them, but when you get married, your best girlfriend cannot be your best friend anymore.

"That's what your husband is for. And you are going to need alone time together. Your husband has to be your wingman."

Priorities and friendships change and it's a matter of evolving with this shift and accepting the new lay of the land when it comes to relationships.

That's where the problems began for the woman posting to Reddit. Her close friend Bethany is getting married to her fiancé, Jim, the day after Christmas, but she won't be there on account of what has happened.

She said she and Bethany "used to be really close like sisters" until she started going out with Jim and "prioritising her relationship." Though she says they still saw each other, Bethany stopped playing basketball with her and her friends and took up yoga. She said when they did hung out Bethany seemed "distant" even though she insisted to her friend she was "fine."

On top of all this, Bethany also "dropped out of college" and became a certified yoga trainer in a move her friend felt ruined her "academic career." "I thought Jim was behind this but everyone says she seems really happy now," she wrote. "I couldn't see it and I always thought she changed for the worse."

Though Bethany insisted she never stopped hanging out with them, the woman remained upset over things, saying "she always had time for Jim but never for us."

Despite being told by others she was "overreacting," things came to a head during Bethany's bachelorette party when she was overheard complaining that the bride-to-be had spent too much time on the wedding and had "lost herself to that man and her pretentious hobbies."

Bethany's sister overheard this and told her what she had said. A day later, she messaged the friend to tell her she was uninvited. The text accused her of being "overly judgemental" and added that she didn't "deserve to be part of her special day."

Though the woman said she was left "completely heartbroken" other friends said she "had it coming" and her "attitude" towards Bethany had always been leading up to this moment.

They weren't alone in offering up this frank assessment either with the people of Reddit proving similarly unsympathetic. Acrobatic-Cover-2712 led the charge. "You've been judging her for her choices for years, then were bashing her at the bachelorette party because she (checks notes) does yoga?" they wrote. "Congrats, you just cost yourself a friendship."

K-no-B said that the original poster was "fooling" herself with her claims Bethany didn't make time for her, noting that the bachelorette party was a "perfect opportunity" to spend time together, and she spent it "tearing her 'friend' down instead."

Ozagnaria felt the friend was in for a "rude awakening" over the next few years. "As you get older you have to make time for friendships, and it is hard to do because as you age your life becomes bigger with more responsibilities and obligations that you have to fulfill because you are the sole person responsible for making sure x, y, z is taken care of," they said.

Brokenchaoscat was less forgiving in their assessment, branding the poster "single and bitter" over her treatment of Bethany's fiance and claiming she is "mentally and emotionally stuck in high school." Dvddym3l agreed: "You sound jealous and bitter, and if it was such an issue, you should've talked to her to her face. not behind her back."

Newsweek has reached out to the original poster for comment.

In a somewhat similar case, a bridesmaid was being uninvited to another wedding after it emerged she would have to wear black for the ceremony.

Elsewhere, another woman's place in a wedding appeared in jeopardy after she refused to dye her hair and cover up her tattoos for the service.
