Best Friends Recreate Same Picture for 16 Years: 'Perfect Time Capsule'

A video showing two best friends who recreated a picture taken together in 2007 every year since then has gone viral on TikTok.

The clip was posted by Adri Diaz (@adrimfdiaz93), who is a comedian based in Los Angeles, according to her TikTok profile. The video has received more than 15.6 million views since it was first shared on November 11. A message overlaid on the video reads: "My best friend and I recreated the same photo every year, at the same place."

The footage shows an image taken each year from 2007 to 2023. In each picture, two women are sitting shoulder to shoulder at a table, with their eyes gazing up towards the ceiling. One woman is holding a Starbucks drink in her hand, with the straw from the drink resting on the left corner of mouth. The other is seen holding a bag of fries from McDonald's, while holding a fry up to the left corner of her mouth.

The women's dedication to their friendship is impressive because, despite a renewed interest on the importance of friendships in the post-pandemic era, Americans were found to have fewer close friendships than they once did. They also talk to their friends less often and rely less on their pals for personal support, according to a May 2021 poll conducted by the Survey Center on American Life, a nonprofit.

The survey found that around half of Americans were reported to have lost touch with at least one friend during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, nearly as many made a new friend in this same period. Many reported having "activity friendships or situational friends—people they see at certain times or places," while most said they have a best friend, even if fewer than in the past, the study found.

'Perfect Reflection of Every Year'

A caption shared with the viral video reads: "I got emotional making this." The slideshow also includes an image stitched together from shots of the women on Zoom in 2020, the year of the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw families and friends separated due to lockdowns and safety restrictions in place.

The latest post has delighted users on TikTok, with several loving the various fashion trends seen in each picture.
