Al-Hijra, the Muslim new year, will start on Friday, July 29, at sunset.
Similar to Eid al-Adha, it's a significant date in the Islamic lunar calendar and is a public holiday in Muslim countries including the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia and Tunisia.
The lunar calendar—or Hijri—has been used for more than 1,440 years and helps date significant celebrations and events, such as Eid al-Fitr and the Hajj. The first month of the calendar is called Muharram.
